[365] Prints & Patterns

Esther Jongste in Boazum, the Netherlands created the [365] Prints & Patterns project...

Why did you decide to do this project? The reason why I decide to start my 365 project was to discover if there was enough inspiration available to make a career shift and to become a professional surface pattern designer. And at the same time to improve my skills and express myself.

How has doing a yearlong/daily project affected your life? From the start I felt pretty much at home with the process in creating something every day. Even on days where I hadn't a clue where to find inspiration for the challenge of the day, I came up with something reasonable.

For example: to create a pattern about a dream [day 27], seems to me quite difficult. While thinking about the process and the experience of dreaming, slowly the creation revealed for my eyes. You can read and watch the rest of the story HERE.

After, round and about, forty editions, my mission was accomplished and I knew there would be enough inspiration every single day.  And that moment was the turning point where I decided to exchange my 365 project into a new project: becoming a professional in surface design.

A series of e-courses at Pattern Observer followed and with that, the courage grew to make it all happen.

Since the beginning of 2014 my EM | Surface Design Studio is a fact. I developed a portfolio and a website tuned to the textile design industry as relevant tools to get into business and be successful.

To support my business activities I am planning to start a new blog. The main goal is to show what my inspiration sources are. By joining the 'make something 365 & get unstuck' project I now know that inspiration can be found always and anywhere.

That your project will bring you, where you want yourself to be.

Ann's 365 Days of Pattern

Ann Kilzer in Austin, Texas is creating 365 Days of Pattern...

Why did you decide to do this project? After studying both printmaking and computer science in college, I made the more practical choice to pursue a technical career, but always aimed to maintain my artistic interests. Now that I'm finished with grad school and have a more balanced life, this project gives me an opportunity to rekindle my creativity.

Why patterns? I've unknowingly been dabbling in this area for awhile, but I finally have decided to focus my work. As an art student, I often received comments that my work always had some "all-over pattern" to it. I doodled pages of repeating coat hangers in my math notebooks, admired vintage wallpapers and islamic designs, and secretly desired to become a textile designer. Now that I'm in my late 20s I feel inspired to make my dreams possible, even if it is in a small way. A year ago I discovered the works of Florence Broadhurst, who really elevated wallpaper and textile design to high art. I feel inspired to explore what kind of patterns I can make.

How has doing a yearlong/daily project affected your life? I'm finally putting my art studio and drafting table to good use. Doing this project has been really fulfilling. I have plans to start block printing on fabric in the coming weeks. It's really exciting to be making something with my hands again.

One unexpected change is that I'm getting lots feedback from friends on social media; specifically, many people are sharing patterns with me. It's very rewarding to see that my project is making other people think about art.

I've also extended my pattern blog to feature guest artists. I'm not part of any art community right now, so this is my attempt to connect with other artists online. I really had a great time interviewing Alyssa from Because Patterns. I found her work via Facebook, and am so thankful I reached out to her. Learning how she creates her work was very inspiring. 365 Days of Pattern

Why did you decide to do this project? I was really inspired by Lisa Congdon's 365 Days of Hand Lettering on her blog, Today is Going to be Awesome. I used to draw every day and fill sketchbooks up with regularity, and the past few years had been pretty void of that. I was in a place where I thought, well, it's never going to amount to anything so you should be spending your time on other things. In 2012, I spent a lot of time feeling busy, overworked, and stressed, and I just realized that it wasn't working for me and I really wanted to push myself to get back into the creative habit

I've always been drawn to doodling patterns and as both a knitter and quilter I think about them a lot. I've often wanted to setup a small screenprinting operation in our basement to print fabric patterns, but just could never justify the start-up expense without a clear backlog of ideas. I decided to blend all of these things together and embark on a project to produce a pattern repeat in each day of 2013.

How has doing a yearlong/daily project affected your life? The biggest thing I've noticed so far, at just 1 month in, is that it makes me feel as if there are more hours in the day. Something about being able to produce something tangible each day just makes it feel like it's possible to do even more. Usually I only have 30 or 45 minutes to finish a piece, so I have to think about it ahead of time and do a bit of planning. When I do have extra time, I can easily spend a couple of hours or more working on it (or re-drawing the same piece over and over until it's just right).

I've also learned that not every day produces a polished piece of work that I'm proud of, and that's totally OK. Ideally I'd have everything "finished" to the point where it's a seamless, repeatable design – but in reality, I don't have the time or technology on hand to make that happen. The first week or two I wasn't really happy about that, but I've gotten more comfortable with the idea of this being a sort of sketchbook and an ongoing process of idea generation.

Anne-Liesje's A Pattern A Day

Anne-Liesje in Belgium is making A Pattern a Day...

Why did you decide to do this project? I started the project after I saw a little article about daily projects and your book and site in 'Flow magazine'. A new creative experience was very welcome in my busy life full of stress and studying so that's why I decided to start up my own daily project. I have now my little (or sometimes bigger) creative moment to relax, be creative and make some nice patterns. :)

How has doing a yearlong/daily project affected your life? I just started the project but already I feel a big difference. I'm looking to the world with a much wider view and a open mind. Everywhere where I go, I'm looking around if there are things that could inspire me or that I can use for a new pattern. Also making the patterns helps me to relax and to clear my mind after a busy day.

Anna's A Pattern A Day

Anna Johansson in Sweden is making Ett Mönster Om Dagen AKA A Pattern A Day

Why did you decide to do this project? There are a thousand things I want to do, but I get tired just by thinking of all that is possible. Instead, it becomes nothing. But last Christmas I received a book; 365: A Daily Creativity Journal. One project. One year. Ok, let's go. My 365-day project starts here, January 2012. A pattern a day, for one year.

How has doing a yearlong/daily project affected your life? First of, the insight that creativity has its ups and downs. All the time. Always. I'm more confident that my passion and ideas will endure.
Secondly, the best way to make room for new ideas is by executing the current ones.

365 Prints and Pattterns

José Kranen in Panningen, The Netherlands is making 365 Prints and Patterns...

Why did you decide to do this project? I'm a graphic designer with a passion for fashion. My dream is to combine these two and be a print and pattern designer one day.

How has doing a yearlong/daily project affected your life? In a short time i expanded my portfolio big time from zero patterns to 137, when my project ends on september 1th that will be a total of 365 patterns. Because i have the 'duty' to blog about my experiences every thursday i take the time to really draw a pattern every day. Normally i wouldn't take that time and make lame excuses. And the greatest thing about this project is that i'm getting more inspiration every day and i'm learning so much along the way. It's like i'm giving myself a 'design prints and patterns' course. I'm hooked and working hard to let my dream become reality!
